Wrapping It Up
The original Dubrovnik chessmen were commissioned by FIDE for the 9th Chess Olympiad, held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (now known as Croatia) between August 20th and September 11th, 1950. The pieces that were designed lacked many of the details found in other Chess sets from the period, such as a cross finial on the King and a miter in the Bishops, instead they were designed from the ground up to withstand tournament play, with wider and sturdier bases than other sets.
The Dubrovnik chessmen were redesigned for the 19th Chess Olympiad, held from September 5th to 27th in Siegen, West Germany. This tournament is well-known because of the match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer, setting the stage for Fischer’s World Championship match against Spassky in 1972. The 1970 version refined the Knight design and streamlined the rest of the Chessmen, producing a smoother design.
Fischer has been photographed and videotaped extensively playing with his 1970’s-era Dubrovnik set, most notably in the HBO documentary Bobby Fischer vs. The World.
