Elephantsare the largest land animals that exist. Three living species are currently recognized: the African savanna elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. They form an informal group within the Elephantidae family of proboscis. Elephantidae are the only surviving family of proboscis; extinct limbs include behemoths. Elephantidae also contain several extinct groups, including mammoths and upright-tusked elephants. African elephants have larger ears and a concave back, while Asian elephants have smaller ears and a convex or flat back. The distinguishing features of all elephants include a long proboscis called the proboscis, tusks, large atria, massive legs, and hard but sensitive skin. The trunk is used for breathing, for carrying food and water in the mouth, and for gripping objects. Fangs, which arise from the incisors, serve as both weapons and tools for moving objects and digging.
