Gargoyle

In architecture, and particularly in Gothic architecture, a gargoyle (/ ˈɡɑːrɡɔɪl /) is a carved or shaped grotesque: 6-8 with a spout designed to drain water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thus preventing rain water to run off the masonry walls and erode the mortar in between. Architects have often used multiple gargoyles on a building to divide the flow of rainwater from the roof to minimize potential damage from a thunderstorm. A depression is dug at the back of the gargoyle and rainwater usually comes out through the open mouth. Gargoyles are generally an elongated fantasy animal as the length of the gargoyle determines how far the water is directed from the wall. When Gothic flying buttresses were used, aqueducts were sometimes carved into the buttress to divert water to the walls of the naves.
